Stolen scoots
Scooters are a hot comodity, You need to invest in at least a 5-6 ft Kryptonite lock and LOCK THE THING TO A LIGHTPOLE OR SOMETHING PEOPLE. GEEZ. I feel bad for you'all that have spent the money for a quality scooter and had it stolen by some LOW RENT PIECE OF SHIT TRAILERPARK TRASH that couldn't imagain working for something they like. Protect yourselves PLEASE. A good lock is only about $50 and a small price to pay for secrurity. Those of you that still have there scoots come to meet on the 23rd of July.

Derestricting vs Upgrading my Kymco People 50

I'm so glad to have found this forum! Two weeks ago I bought my first scooter, a cream and tan Kymco People 50. I absolutely love it! I'd love it a little more, though, it it went just a teeny bit faster.

I'm currently looking at options for upgrading it. One local scooter shop offers an 80cc upgrade kit to add 15mph to it, which would be about $300. The dealer where I bought it offers derestricting it which they say would add about 5, maybe 10mph to it for about $100.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these options? Or something else entirely? What are the pros and cons of upgrading vs just leaving it as is? I love my scooter and don't want to do anything that might damage it.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Scooter accessories
Other than ScooterSeatCovers.com (the creator of this site is on a haitus and not taking any orders for a couple months now), does anyone know where I can get a fitted seat cover? I tried making one of my own, based on the designs at ScooterSeatCovers.com but I had a hard time getting the fit right around the front of the seat.

Attempted theft
Sometime between midnight and six am this morning someone tried walking off with my scooter. I have a feeling they were a clueless drunk idiot because what happened next would be sad otherwise. The steering column was locked so they could only go in circles. They did manage to move it a few parking spaces before giving up. They eventually dropped it on its side in disgust. This added more scratches to the side panel, cracked a rear blinker and caused a fixable bad alignment on the left break grip.

No real harm done other than to their ego for being such a failure. All scooters have the ability to lock the steering column. If you don't know how to do that then pull out your owners guide. Some scooters also have a kickstand lock. These are also worth using.

Have a great day.

Hampton Roads Magazine Did a article on scooting to work. If you are in the Hampton Roads area you can get it at almost any mega-book store or grocery checkouts. They did an interview with me and some others. As a bonus there is a picture of me looking disheveled. They only screwed up my name one time. Which is much better than average. :)

Time for the first round of maintenance
This weekend, it's time to drop the scoot off for it's 600 mi maintenance. I'm curious if anyone out there has any recommendations on places to check out or to avoid. I bought the scoot on in Newport News and it's really not convienent to take it back up there as I live in Norfolk.

stolen scooter...
thursday afternoon my husband calls me and asks, "Where's you scooter?" i answer saying it should be in the drive way.
"it's not there," he says. i ask if he's joking.
he wasn't.

my poor cute bubblegum pink scooter was stolen out of my drive way.
so i filed a police report. ((side note: the cop that came was the same one who gave me that ticket when i first moved here. weird.))

then saturday i get a call saying they found my scooter and a cop will meet me at the intersection near my house.
in my mind scenarios play out: some neighborhood kid has it and i'll get to prosecute his punk ass.
the reality: it's been stripped and ditched in the woods across the street from my house. battery and engine parts gone. front panel ripped off. back trunk compartment cracked open.

i just cried.

i'm not positive what i'll do with it. i'm going to do some research about the worth of the parts that are left and see if i should just sell it for that. or if i should repair it and sell it as a working bike. dunno.

it's an Avanti Beta 50, bought it brand new in early 2007 i think. any ideas?

Police harrassment
I was comming home from work today and the cops pulled me over on VB Blvd. They told me a few things that I can find no evidance for: A vehicle may not travel on a road where it can not reach the posted speed limit. They said this could result in a ticket for empeding the flow of trafic. Both of these are false. Fortunatly since I don't argue with cops[0] they didn't argue with me or even ask to see my legally required identification.

About a year ago we were pulled over for being stopped at a red light because we were abreast of each other in the same lane. The cop said that this was illegal even though this is in all motercycle safty books. I pressed him on this and made him reaffirm that this was not even permissable at a stop. In the laws below you will find that this is not illegal and in fact scooters can even ride abreast of eachother.

So I went through the Code of Virginia Title 46.2 - MOTOR VEHICLES looking for a printable reference to keep in my scooters boot in case this happens again and they want to argue.

applicable laws, read them, print them, keep them in your bikeCollapse )

Your help please

I remember seeing something a long time ago saying that in Virginia a scooter was not allowed on roads with a posted speed limit of 50 or more but I couldn't find that this time around. Do you know where I might find that?

I heard on the radio recently that you can get a ticket for driving slower than 20 miles under the speed limit for empeding traffic. This makes sence to me but I can't find it in the books. Do you know were I might find that?

One of two things is happening.
1) the cops are ignorant of the laws
2) the cops are not ignorant of the laws and are lying

I won't examin their motives but I do recomend you read the laws and arm yourself.

oil change
last week i changed the oil on my scooter for the first time. it was the easiest thing ever, and i'm angry at myself for waiting so long, but i'm also proud i did it all on my own.

now i need to figure out how to do the gear oil. i need someone to point where it drains fom and gets filled from. i have full confidence that it's also super duper easy :D

One part at a time,
I had a suck horn in my scooter. It was about 125 decibels but it was a meep-please-don't-hit-me noise and I wanted something more. So I went down to Pepboys and got myself a Low E horn. I took off the leg gaurd of my scooter and unpluged the stock horn and plugged in the new one. I put in the key and hit the button. It worked. So I mounted it on and then tried to put the leg gaurd on again. It didn't work. The horn was too big. So I unmounted it and found an area where it could fit if it wasn't mounted. I managed to get the leg gaurd back on with just enough tension to keep it in place through a rocky ride.

Now instead of meep-please-don't-hit-me it is a 132 decibel BARR-get-the-fuck-out-of-my-lane.

If you have the means, I highly recomend picking one up.

New Scooter laws
Effective July 1st there are some new laws effecting scooters in VA.
There is some contradictory information in there. At one point it says "all riders of scooters will have to have a Virginia title, registration card, insurance and license plate. They will require a motorcycle driver's license."
But at another point it says "riders who intend to travel at more than 35 miles per hour will need a license with a motorcycle endorsement."

I am contacting the Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police named in the article to help clear up the confusion.

How about a scooter run!
Sunday July 13th 2 PM (14:00)
7-Eleven on 745 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA
Plaza Dell Sol on 2200 Colonial Ave, Norfolk (Ghent)

This will be a beach to Ghent run. Even a 25 MPH scooter can do it in 90 minutes. Destination is Plaza Dell Sol on 2200 Colonial Ave in Ghent. They have a veg section on their menu so that everyone can do their own thing. Maybe after that some of us will head to the Tap House.

Slow scooters are up front and fast scooters in the back so that no one gets lost. Safety in numbers.
